魂を鼓舞する伝統の力
子どもたちだけですべてが行われる珍しい伝統行事が、南三陸町歌津寄木地区には伝わっている。
1月15日に行われる「ささよ」と呼ばれる小正月の行事だ。
江戸時代から250年もの間続いていると言われ、寄木浜の海上安全と大漁を祈願して、寄木地区の
男の子たちがそれぞれの家の大漁旗を先頭に、家々をまわり唄い込みをする。
「ささよ」という呼び名は、その囃子言葉に由来する。前回は小学1年生から中学3年生までの6人の男子で
行われた。
家々ではお神酒とご祝儀が用意され、お神酒が旗竿の根元に注がれると、子どもたちは一段と高い声で
唄い込む。
その年の年長者が、家々からいただいたご祝儀を、船主が船子に漁で得た利益を分けるように子供たちに
分配する。浜の大人に一歩近づく通過儀礼である。
寄木ささよ保存会会長の畠山鉄雄さんは、子供のころを振り返る。
「毎年、上級生からどれだけお金がもらえるか楽しみだったが、自分が最上級生になったときはたいへんだった。
小さい子どもたちの面倒を看なくてはならないし、最後にお金をどう分配したらいいか悩んだよ。」
一連の行事は、すべての子どもたちに任される。子どもたちの話し合いには、会長といえども、おとなは決して
入れない。長く続いたのは、子どもたちの自主性を尊重する行事だったからかもしれないと畠山さんは語る。
震災で、寄木地区の47軒のうち35軒が流された。複数の仮設住宅に分かれて住むことになったため、
「ささよ」は危機に瀕した。一度でもやめたら途絶えるかもしれない。みんなで話し合い、集落の人々に
仮設住宅から海岸に集まってもらうことでしのいだ。
集落の子どもたちが少なくなった今、2世紀半に渡り続いてきた伝統を未来にどう伝えていくのか、
ここ数年は正念場だ。しかし、寄木の人々は必ずこの伝統を継承していくだろう。真冬の浜に響く
子どもたちの歌声と青空にはためく大漁旗は、寄木浜の原風景なのだから。

In the Yoriki district of Minamisanriku, children carry out a rare

This event, “Sasayo,” has been performed on January 15 for 250
years. At Yorikihama Beach, boys in the Yoriki district go
door-to-door and pray for marine safety and a large catch through
song. The oldest boy carries on his back the flagpole with the banners
used by fishing boats to indicate a large catch (Tairyo-bata) and leads
the younger boys. Last year, six boys, ranging in age from the first
,grade of elementary school to the third grade of junior high school

The oldest boy divided the gifts of money received from each of the
houses among the children in the same way that a ship owner divides
the profits made from fishing to his seamen. It is a rite of passage that

The series of activities for this event are entirely administered by the
.children without any adult supervision
Of the 47 houses in the Yoriki district, 35 houses were washed away
.by the tsunami of 2011, and “Sasayo” was in danger of disappearing

thought. The Chairperson of the Yoriki Sasayo Preservation Society
and others asked people in the district who lived in temporary houses
