“農家の思いを食する”そんな交流もある
リアス式海岸特有の山が海に迫る地形の南三陸は、里海の町だ。
里山の地域、入谷地区では、古くから斜面の多い狭隘な場所で
地道に農業が営まれて来た。阿部博之さんは、りんごなどの果樹栽培
と米作りと畜産を行う専業農家だ。
毎春、阿部さんの畑では、りんごや桃、梨などの果樹が一斉に花をつける。
日本の原風景ともいえる、里山ならではの美しくのどかな景観が、入谷にはある。
決して大農園は営めないが、農家がそれぞれの農地をそれぞれの適性に合わせて、
特徴のあるいい作物を作り、その点と点が結びつけば、入谷地区のような
中山間地での農業の強みが出せると阿部さんは考えている。
阿部さんは、今、企業支援を受けて、トウキという作物栽培を始めた。
トウキは身体が温まり、貧血を改善すると言われている作物で、
根だけでなく葉にも同じ効能があることが知られている。
このような希少価値の高い作物を作ることが、地域の将来を開くと阿部さんは考え、
栽培のむずかしさから最近育てられなくなったササニシキの契約栽培も手がけている。
阿部さんは地域の子どもたちにりんごが実るまでを見せてきた。
給食に阿部さんのりんごが出ると、子どもたちは「阿部さんのりんごだ！」と大喜びでほおばって
くれる。
「農業は食べ物を作り、それが人の身体を作る。その作物には作り手の思いが込められている。
食べる人が『人の思い』を食すること、その思いを理解して食べることが大切だと思う。」
阿部さんの農業哲学である。
グリーンツーリズムに昔から関わってきた阿部さん宅には、全国からさまざまな人が泊まりに来
る。中学３年の春にりんご畑の作業を手伝ってくれた子は、夏休みの度にやって来て、
結婚式にも呼んでくれた。
自分たちの考えに共感してくれれば、人と人とがつながる。
阿部さんの農地では、作物だけでなく、人と人との絆が豊かに育まれているのだ。
このひとつひとつの縁を花開かせ、実らせていく地道な毎日が、南三陸町の未来を創り出す
ことを、阿部さんは身をもって知っている。
桃源郷のような入谷は、多様な付加価値作物で、南三陸に新たな価値を生み出す可能性を秘めてい
る。「南三陸に学べ」と言われるような里山にしたい。豊かな海と山がつながった地の利が生きる町
にしたい。阿部さんの頭の中では、あんころ柿( 干し柿) やら、地元の食材を生かしたレストランや
ら、新しいアイディアが渦巻いている。

With geographical features of mountains located close to the sea and a
jagged coastline, Minamisanriku is a town where the sea meets the forest. In
the Iriya district, the people have painstakingly farmed on narrow farmland,
many located on slopes, since olden times. A full-time farmer, Mr. Hiroyuki
Abe grows fruit such as apples, cultivates rice, and raises livestock.
Every spring, the blossoms on his fruit trees, such as apple, peach, and pear,
all bloom at the same time. This beautiful, peaceful and unspoilt scene is
reminiscent of how Japan must have appeared in ancient times. He thinks
that although large-scale farming cannot be conducted here, if all the farmers
produce crops according to what is most suitable for their respective small
farms, and if the farms form a close connection with each other, this
semimountainous area can be a strong agricultural region making the best use
of their unique features.
Now, Mr. Abe has begun to grow an herb “Chinese
Angelica” while receiving support from business. Mr.
Abe believes that cultivation of rare crops is the key
to future success of this area.
“Farming produces food which, in turn, helps make the
human body. The farmer’s hopes and wishes are put
into producing his crops. It is important that those who
eat the products take the time to think about the
farmer’s wishes.” This is Mr. Abe’s agricultural
philosophy.
If a person can empathize with our idea, the person is
connected with other people. Mr. Abe knows first-hand
that efforts such as diligent day-to-day toil eventually
results in the production of excellent crops and will
lead to a bright future for Minamisanriku.
He says, “I would like our town to make the most of its
geographical advantages of a rich sea and mountains so
that someday, people will say ‘Let’s learn from
Minamisanriku’ ” New ideas continue to whirl around
in Mr. Abe’s head.
