南三陸の人たちの心を示す

mustache&beard「口ひげとあごひげ」というユニット名の小野寺敬さんと小山康博さんは、高校の同級生だ。高校のころからひげ面だったというふたりのユニークな活動は、今年で13年になる。

小山さんは毛筆で独特の文字と絵を描き続けてきた。南三陸町民なら、彼の力強く繊細なタッチの作品を目にしている人も多いはずだ。その作品のディレクションと世に送り出すプロモートを担当してきたのが小野寺さんだ。

ふたりは「M&B」というローカルブランドを大切に育ててきた。2002年、小野寺さんの知り合いの仙台のショップのオーナーが、店のオリジナルブランドとして、M&BのTシャツを販売してくれることになった。アルファベットを毛筆で描いた無国籍なデザインが人気を博した。「笑顔」と「継続」という言葉が記されたTシャツが二人の記念すべき第一歩となった。

以来、150アイテムの作品を世に出したころ、震災が起きた。

『自然に生かされ　自然に奪われ　それでもここで暮らしたい』小野寺さんの心に、ふとこの言葉が浮かんだ。
「その言葉をプリントしたTシャツが、復旧作業に励む南三陸の人たちのユニフォームになればと思ったんです。この言葉を背中に、前向きに進んでほしかった。みんないろんな覚悟があったと思う。全部なくしたけど腹をくくって残ろうと決めた人、本当だったら帰りたいという悔しさ。『んだげっと』という割り切れない思いがそれぞれにあったから。」小野寺さんは振り返る。

小山さんはその言葉を一文字一文字筆がすり切れるような筆圧で描いた。生き生きした線で田束山と荒島も描かれている。袖にプリントされた「南三陸」の「三」の字には、田束山のツツジ、タコの吸盤、サケの鱗をデザインした。自分たちを育てた町への思いが凝縮している。

津波に襲われた翌日、太陽がいつものように昇った。「それでも太陽は昇りやがった」と小野寺さんは思った。その思いは「Rising 3riku」というデザインになった。南三陸のあちこちで、ボランティアさんへの感謝の気持ちを表した二人の作品の出会う。いずれにしても、南三陸の人たちのこころの言葉を、ふたりは代弁し表現し続けてきた。

小山さんは今での創り上げた作品を小野寺さんに見せるとき、顔を見られないくらい緊張するのだという。
「自分は強くなったと思う」小山さんはその過程で自分が鍛えられたと考えている。

ふるさと南三陸を拠点に、グローバルな仕事をしていくことを二人は目指している。

「え？これって南三陸で作られたの？そういう仕事をしたいんです。」

町内のいろいろなところで出会う二人が創った「感謝」の言葉。町を繰り返し訪れるボランティアさんたちとの無言のコミュニケーションツールになっている。

Yasuhiro Oyama   Kei Onodera

Mr. Kei Onodera and Mr. Yasuhiro Oyama make up the group “Mustache and beard.” They were classmates in high school and both have had their mustache and beard since then, giving rise to their name. Thirteen years have passed .since they started their unique activities.
Mr. Oyama has continued draw distinctive characters and pictures with a brush. Mr. Onodera has directed and promoted the works produced by Mr. Oyama.” Nature allows us to live but can also take everything away from us. Even knowing this, we still wish to live here.” This phrase aptly describes how Mr. Onodera felt after the disaster.
“Therefore, I decided to make a T-shirt with these words printed on the back and hoped that it would become the “uniform” for the people of Minamisanriku as they strived to recover. We believed that wearing this T-shirt would give people a positive outlook. The people of Minamisanriku were prepared for hardships after the disaster. Some decided to remain here, preparing themselves for the worst, and some decided to leave this town with strong feelings of .regret at not being able to live here. I think every person felt uncertainty about their future,” he recalls Yasuhiro writes calligraphy with strength and dynamism. The Chinese characters for Mt. Tatsugane and Arashima Island are drawn with lively lines. For the character ” 三 “(san) of ” 南三陸 Minamisanriku),” which is printed on the sleeve, azalea blossoms from Mt. Tatsugane, octopus) suckers, and salmon scales were used for the design. His heartfelt gratitude to the town that raised .them went into creation of the T-shirt .Kei and Yasuhiro have continued to express what is in the hearts of the people in Minamisanriku Both of them hope to carry out activities on a global scale with their hometown of Minamisanriku as .their base.I feel that I am doing meaningful work,” he says enthusiastically.
