森を創る仕事を誇りたい

佐藤太一さんは、30歳。今、山の仕事に夢中だ。

「山を良くしよう、いい杉にしようと手を入れる。すると、あからさまに結果が出るんです。土のにおいが変わるし、やったらやっただけ、山が変わるんですよ。」

震災のあった年には、大学院で2万6千年前の宇宙放射線の強度変動を研究していた。仙台で育った佐藤さんは、ことある度に南三陸町志津川の父親の実家で過ごしてきた。小さい頃から、父親に連れられて山にもよく出かけた。

震災は思い出深い家のすべてを奪った。唯一残ったのは、代々守り続けてきた山だった。その山を守りたい、山が育む資源をもっと活用できるようにしたい。そんな思いが佐藤さんを突き動かした。

佐藤さんがまず取り組んだのは、GIS（地理情報システム）の導入だ。同じ樹齢のエリアを効率的に管理することで、森林の経営計画がぐっと立てやすくなる。会社の保有する森林区画の境界を改めて調べ、林班図も作成した。そして、今はFSCという国際的な森林管理認証を得るための準備中だ。適切な管理のもと、持続可能な森林経営が実現されているか、森林が生物多様性を保全しているか、地域社会や文化との共生を実現しているかなど、厳しい基準をクリアした森林にだけ与えられる認証制度にチャレンジしようというのである。まだ日本でもその認証を受けている森林は多くない。認証を得られれば、自社の山から生まれる木材は、南三陸の豊かな自然と人との関わりの物語を雄弁に語ることになるだろう。

南三陸の森林は、雪が少なく、台風の被害も獣害も少ない。杉の生長量も比較的良く、なだらかで手入れや搬出の作業がしやすい山の地形に恵まれている。まさに林業の適地だと、佐藤さんは熱く語る。

「林業はもちろん収入を得る商売ですが、直接的に自然に関わって、動植物の住処である山の機能を最大限に高め発揮させる仕事でもあるのです。生物が交流する森林には、生命の循環が生まれ、山の木を育てる養分が補給されていく。そんな森を作る仕事は、本当にやりがいがあります。」

佐藤さんは森林見学会や林業体験を積極的に展開している。参加h差は、みんな南三陸の山の美しさに感嘆する。

山の手入れは主に秋から冬に佳境に入る。木や地形、方角などを見ながら、枝払い、間伐などの作業を地道に行って行く。

Taiichi Sato

Mr. Taiichi Sato is 30 years old. At present, he is absorbed in forestry work.
“If we diligently maintain and preserve the forests, the smell of the soil will change. All our hard work will pay off, and the forests will change.”
Although he grew up in Sendai, he occasionally visited his father’s parents ‘
home in Shizugawa. He used to accompany his father to the mountains .
The earthquake on March 11 destroyed the family home that had held so many unforgettable memories .Only the mountain, which his ancestors had protected for generations, remained .
“I want to protect the mountain.” This thought drove him to work for the forestland.
He is trying to obtain the Forest Management Certification (FMC) from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This certification is given only to forestland that is managed under strict standards such as for sustainable forest management, preservation of biodiversity in forests, and harmonious coexistence with the community and culture. If certified, the lumber produced from the mountain owned by his company will eloquently tell the story of the relationship between the bounties of nature and the people of Minamisanriku.
“Although working in forestry means earning a living, it also involves working to maximize the functions of a natural mountain environment where animals and plants live and directly affects the workings of nature .I feel that I am doing meaningful work”,he says enthusiastically.
