南三陸杉で「木」の時代を創る

あの日、工場も倉庫も機械も自宅も、何もかもが失われた。
丸平木材は、明治41年の創業以来、南三陸町志津川で木材を商ってきた。

5代目の小野寺邦夫さんは、震災直後を振り返る。製材工場があった場所に来る日も来る日も座り込む日々。自然がぶるっと体を震わせただけで、すべてがなくなった。それなのに、何事もなかったように海は青く、緑が芽吹いていく。人の世はなんとはかなくちっぽけなものかと小野寺さんは感じた。呆然自失の小野寺さんに、林業仲間が声をかけた。仲間も山以外のすべてを流されていた。

「丸平さんさえ元に戻れば、みんなやれる。山は元気だ。」と。

働く場がなければ希望がない。山は変わっていない。山の木が育つ長い時間を思えば、工場なんてまた作ればいいじゃないか。小野寺さんは、社員を集めて言った。

「社員全員、生き残ることができた。私たちは何かをやるために生かされたのだと思う。それは、この地域の木を輝かせることだ。」

小野寺さんは南三陸町が産する杉材のブランド化に2008年から取り組んでいた。丸平木材で挽く木材は、すべて南三陸産にこだわった。米なら生産者の顔を思い浮かべることができるが、杉を見て林業家の顔を思い浮かべられる人はいない。杉を育てた人の姿が見え、ストーリーを発信できなければブランド化はできない。使う人と山の人の関係を密にしたいと、南三陸町山の会の一員になった。

南三陸の木を輝かせるために、小野寺さんは高台に事務所、製材工場をいち早く再建し、木材の精油や酵素を損なうことなく乾燥させることができる低温乾燥庫を導入した。

杉の学名はクリプトメリアジャポニカ。『隠された日本の財産』という意味だという。杉は日本にしかない木なのだ。空気を清浄化する力に優れ、室内の湿度変化をマイルドにし、集中力を高めリラックスできる有益物質を放出する。内装材にぜひ使ってほしい木材だという。何より日本の風土に適している。

ハウスメーカーや山主と力を合わせて、家を建てる家族を山に招き、大黒柱を伐採してもらっている。森の中で、お目当ての木に家族全員が順番にチェンソーを入れる。杉がどーんと倒れるとき、濃厚な杉の香りが森にあふれ出し、ピンクの木肌が現れる。その赤さが血のように見えることがあるという。それを見て涙する子どももいるそうだ。まさに、それは命をいただく儀式であり、木の第二の人生の門出の瞬間なのだ。

生活の中から木が遠ざかっていく時代の先に、きっと木の次の時代がやってくる。小野寺さんは社員や林業仲間とともに、懸命にその未来へ向かっている。

小野寺さんの深い知識と熱い思いが、人々の心を動かしていく。

Kunio Onodera

On that day, he lost everything ― his factory warehouse, machines, and house. Maruhei Lumber was established in 1904 and has sold lumber in Shizugawa since then.
The 5th generation president Mr. Kunio Onodera looks back on the devastation immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake. When he was speechless with shock and despair, his forestry colleagues cheered him up and said, “Once you are back to your former self, everything will be all right. The mountains themselves are in fine shape.“Mr. Onodera gathered his employees and told them, “All of us were able to survive the disaster. We must have been kept alive for some purpose. I think it is to make the trees strong and healthy so that they can brighten up this region.”
In order to bring vitality back to Minamisanriku, Mr. Onodera quickly rebuilt his office and saw mill on higher ground. He also introduced a low-temperature drying chamber that can dry lumber without spoiling their essential oil and enzymes.
The scientific name of the Japan cedar is cryptomeria japonica. It means “hidden treasure of Japan.” The cedar trees only grow in Japan. It has the power to purify air, lessen the degree of changes in indoor humidity, and emit useful substances that heighten concentration and make you relax. Mr. Onodera strongly recommends the Japanese cedar as a material for interior use. Above all, the Japanese cedar is suitable for the Japanese climate.
He works together with housing manufacturers and mountain owners, and invites families who are planning to build a house to the mountains. He then offers them the opportunity to cut the tree that will become the main pillar of their home. In the forest, family members take turns cutting the targeted tree with a chain saw. When the cedar falls with a loud boom, the rich scent of wood fills the forest and the pink wood surface of the fallen tree appears. In some cases, it appears that the fallen tree is shedding blood. Some children shed tears when they see this. This seems like a ceremony to take the life of the tree so it can start its second life in a different form.
In an age when trees seem to becoming more distant from people’s lives, Mr. Onodera believes that a time will surely come when trees become a close part of our lives. Together with his employees and forestry colleagues, Mr. Onodera is looking towards a future where this will happen.
